The political atmosphere in Delta South has in recent weeks been filled with debates and commentaries, particularly following the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by some women groups, conspicuously leaving out Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas, the distinguished senator representing Delta South Senatorial District. The omission has sparked questions, but the truth remains clear: Joel Onowakpo-Thomas is not just a senator in name; he is a working senator whose record of legislative contributions, empowerment programmes, and infrastructural interventions speak louder than any political endorsement.

In every political season, critics abound. Some do so out of honest concern, while others merely seek to undermine. But one fact that no one of goodwill can deny is that Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas has shown himself to be a practical servant of his people. His style may not fit into the noisy theatrics of social media politicians, but the results of his work speak louder than many words.

Delta South is not a small district to manage. With eight local government areas under his representation, the Senator carries a responsibility that only the state government itself shares in scope. Where government neglect has often left communities in frustration, he has stepped in to fill the gap, bringing relief to artisans, traders, farmers, youths, and the vulnerable.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Nigeria Local Content, Senator Joel occupies a role of immense national significance. Yet, despite the weight of responsibilities in Abuja, he has not neglected his constituents at home. His record in sponsoring bills is clear and commendable: the Federal Maritime University at Okerenkoko, the Federal College of Fishery and Aquatic Science at Emede, a Federal School of Midwifery and Nursing, a Federal Polytechnic in Bomadi, and the upgrading of Oleh General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre, and others still undergoing reading process. These bills are people-centred and aimed at decentralising development so that Delta South is not left behind in the larger Nigerian project.

Beyond the chambers of the Senate, his vision has translated into tangible projects across the district. From modern streetlights in Patani, to internal walkways and town planning works in several communities, and the transformation of Emede Health Centre into a modern facility, his handprints are visible. These are not cosmetic gestures but meaningful strides that improve daily lives.

At the Oleh Township Stadium, Delta South witnessed an unprecedented empowerment programme where artisans received tools, traders were supported with grants, farmers benefitted from agricultural aid, and youths gained access to skill development opportunities. In addition, his influence has opened doors for young men and women to build careers in the military and paramilitary institutions, creating sustainable livelihoods and reshaping futures.

Much of the opposition he faces today comes from certain acclaimed political leaders. These individuals, who once thrived on patronage and manipulation, saw their influence curtailed when the senator introduced a clear organogram of leadership in Delta South. By ensuring accountability and removing wasteful structures, he stripped them of their easy sources of income. In retaliation, they brand him arrogant, rude, and cruel. Yet some of these are the same people who betrayed him at the polls and now demand a place in his political structure. Their bitterness, however, does not erase the reality of his performance.

It is therefore misleading to suggest that his record is empty or that his actions are mere political gimmicks. The truth is that Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas has begun well, laying a foundation that inspires confidence in the future. If his first year could draw thousands to a unifying empowerment programme, then the years ahead hold even greater promise.

Delta South deserves representation that is visible, effective, and lasting. Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas has shown that his leadership is not about empty popularity contests, but about tangible results that touch real lives. He is not just solving today’s needs; he is building the foundation for tomorrow. His leadership is about legacy, ensuring that Delta South is not remembered for its struggles but celebrated for its progress.
