Delta state commissioner of police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim has chickened out by denying that he had at no time disclosed to the press or any member of the public that the senator representing Delta Central constituency, Mr. Ovie Omo Agege, lied about the purported assassination attempt on him, his wife and other APC leaders.
The Delta State commissioner of police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim had on Sunday dismissed the claims by the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Senator representing Delta central, Ovie Omo-Agege, that the invasion of the venue of his second phase of his constituency ‘empowerment’ program in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of Delta State by thugs was an assassination attempt on him, his wife, members of his family, APC leaders and his supporters.
The police boss who dismissed the senator’s claims on the telephone while speaking with an online correspondent, had insisted that they were not aware of any assassination plot against Mr. Omo-Agege adding that politicians are fond of making a mountain out of a mole hill.
“I don’t know about any assassination attempt on the senator. Didn’t he have policemen with him? I know he reported a complaint at the Ekpan police station that he was attacked by thugs during an empowerment program but I don’t know whether it boils down to an assassination attempt. My question is didn’t he have policemen with him? As a senator who will go on empowerment program will he go empty handed?
“If you are going for empowerment program are you not supposed to tell the police that you will do empowerment program and they give you police, did he do that? Also, didn’t he have police operatives with him? Somebody will not just wake up to say they attempted to assassinate him. When are making allegations you have a substantial proves not just making allegations.”
According to the police boss, Mr. Omo-Agege has access to police and security operatives and when going for such empowerment program he ought to inform the DPO or the area commander to provide him with security, adding that “You know these politicians, they can just say anything for their own political gains.”
Perceiving trouble over his reactions barely 24 hours it was made, the chicken hearted commissioner of police, Ibrahim issued a statement through the command image maker denying his own Sunday statement dismissing the senator’s claims.
In the police statement titled “Rebuttal On Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s Alleged Assassination Attempt” signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Aniamaka and obtained by HardReporters said, “The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Zanna M. Ibrahim, psc has stated that the Command had at no time disclosed to the press or any member of the public that Senator Ovie Omo Agege, Senator representing Delta Central constituency, lied.”
According to the statement the CP made the observation, Monday, at the Conference room of the Command Headquarters, Asaba, during the weekly briefing with the Command’s management team, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Heads of Departments (HODs) and stated that at “no time did the Command dismiss the distinguished senator’s report.”
Ibrahim who noted that preliminary investigation into the case had already commenced at the Area Command office, Warri, and will be transferred to SCIID, Asaba, with a view to getting to the root of the case, fishing out the culprits and bringing them to justice, however called on politicians and other stakeholders to always avail themselves of their unfettered access to the police and other security agencies to seek for provision of adequate security especially when distributing money and other items to their constituents as hoodlums may want to hijack such events to their own advantage.
The CP, urged politicians to eschew anything that may heat up the polity and promised that all reported incidents will be properly investigated without any fear or favour.
