BREAKING: Buhari Declares June 12 As Democracy Day, Cancels May 29

President Muhammadu Buhari has altered Nigeria’s democracy day which is observed in every May, 29, declaring that June 12 will henceforth be marked as the country’s Democracy Day.

According to the President, June 12, 1993, was the date of the election popularly adjudged to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history adding that June 12 “was far more symbolic of democracy in the Nigerian context than May 29 or even October 1”.

In press statement personally signed by President Buhari, also announced that MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled election, will be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, GCFR.

“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day. We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola,” Buhari said.
