There was panic on Thursday at the ongoing 21st African Senior Athletics Championships, tagged “Asaba 2018” following the collapsed of a water head tank at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The collapsed water head tank which left several vehicles and wall fence damaged, created panic among the athletes and spectators as the game was going on.

Speaking on the development, a staff of the Delta State Sports Commission, Asaba, who pleaded for anonymity, said “All construction carried out in the stadium were done in a hurry resulting to substandard work. The collapsed water head tank was poorly done hence the collapse. You can even see that the stadium was not completed before the game started.”

According to our sources, governor Ifeanyi Okowa agreed to host the championships following the financial gains that would accrued his private pockets.

“The substandard execution of the stadium and the host of the championships is another avenue to loot the treasury by governor Okowa and his cronies. The event and the stadium are being used as conduit pipes by the governor. We learnt that the sum of N3.8 billion was released by Okowa for the hosting of the championship.

“Everything concerning the championship was done poorly. From the construction to the hosting of the event proper were done in a hurry just to loot the state in their usual way of amassing wealth. Visit the restrooms at the stadium, there is not water to flush out the system and as a result the whole place is messed up.” a source said.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Sports and Youths Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung was booed by spectators while delivering President Muhammadu Buhari’s speech at the opening of the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships.
